We use the synthetic phonics scheme Read Write Inc to teach children the skills to become enthusiastic, fluent and confident readers and writers.
Our Reading Leader is Miss Henton
At Townville Academy we teach every child to read using the systematic synthetic phonics approach. We use the phonics programme Read, Write Inc to teach children the skills they need to become enthusiastic, fluent and confident readers and writers.
The Read Write Inc phonics scheme promotes the teaching of phonics through a structured and uniform approach with the children participating 100% in the learning process. Phonics begins right from the very beginning of your child’s journey here at Townville Academy. In our nursery, children begin the RWI programme in summer term and are ready to hit the ground running in their first year in reception.
Pupils are regularly assessed by our reading leader, Miss Henton, who monitors the progress of every child alongside the reading team to ensure all children are reading to their challenge point. If your child needs extra support in their reading journey they will be given daily additional structured sessions alongside the daily phonics hour in order to be the best that they can be!
Every week your child will bring home Phonics QR codes which are specifically matched to the sounds they have learnt in class that week. Support your child to make time to watch and engage in these videos every week. Each video watch can be recorded via the School gateway app as one of your child’s 20 reads per half term and is counted towards the 20 read challenge!
When your child is ready to read words, each week they will bring home a phonically decodable storybook matched to their challenge point. We recommend you listen to your child read their phonics storybook 4 times a week for a minimum of 10 minutes. These reads can also be recorded via the School Gateway app towards your child’s 20 read challenge.
